Local organizers of a collaborative art exchange believe it has the potential to cut through dehumanizing stereotypes and show people to one another as they really are. Their avenue is a set of murals, painted by children of one country and sent to children of another. One, painted by Iraqi refugee children in Jordan, was recently honored as a finalist in an international competition. Another, to be created this weekend by young local artists, may find its way to the side of a pyramid. As an offshoot of Northampton resident Claudia Lefko’s Iraqi Children’s Art Exchange, the project is a kind of rhetoric-free dialogue between innocents – on a grand scale. “For me, it’s not about understanding who other people are, it’s who we are,” said Lefko. “The work is about seeing people on both sides.” This weekend, Iraqi artist Thamer Dawood will join local artists Lydia Nettler, Harriet Diamond and Bob Hepner at the Northampton Center for the Arts, as 15 students ages 12 to 18 work on a mural titled “How Will They Know Us?” View full article » Read More & Comment refugee children’s drawings of earthquake experiences Filed under: World Refugees Artists NEWS, asia by ifacabhutan — Leave a comment September 10, 2010 As Caleb travels in the states this week, the ministry goes on here in Pignon, Haiti. Some newly arrived children are settling in at the camp. A few of them missed the bus to come home after school but other than these few minor delays, the days are progressing. The folks at the camp who are sick are being seen by our local hospital staff and being followed up by our camp and church volunteer staff to make sure they get all the medicines they need. We are expecting another group of American volunteers who are arriving with Caleb on Friday. We will really miss the great group of trauma counselors who were here recently from FAVACA. They gave me some of the drawings that the children had produced as they shared what they had been through. It occurred to me that many might be interested in what the children had to share. So please find several images attached below. (Warning: some of the images are graphic) While the images are startling in their content, those of you who saw the images on the news know the children are just relating the reality of what they have experienced. The youngster who drew the image (below, left) told how he saw a man electrocuted from active power lines. The artist to the right explained these were images of cars and trucks piled up and thrown around like toys. What is amazing to me is that even after experiencing such trauma, the kids are responsive and are enjoying getting back into life, play and school. While the capital city grapples with an ever increasing garbage issue, city corporation officials and artists from VAST showcased just what could be done with some of it. From a mixture of papers, plastics, cartons, bottles and other garbage, they have crafted an eight foot giant. Similarly, a domed structure, resembling an igloo, was made, using plastics, cartons, empty beer cans and wires. A tower, nearly the height of the clock tower, was also erected with a wooden pole and pet bottles. Even discarded discs were not spared, as they were turned into wind chimes. Vouchers cards and cigarette covers that people carelessly throw along the streets were accumulated to send a message. While hundreds of cigarette covers were used to make a giant human palm, voucher cards in their thousands were stapled into a ball the size of a gym ball, representative of the earth. I’m pretty sure they’re supposed to be of Burma. They were made by the children who sit with me around this table–all refugees from one of Burma’s largest Buddhist states. The youngest child at the table is 6-years-old. The eldest is 17. Most of the paintings are filled with brightly colored hills, flowers, rainbows and mountains. The trees are plentiful and green and the sun is big, round, yellow. However, there’s one painting markedly different than the rest. In that one I see two soldiers with guns shooting a man. In the foreground of the same painting there’s another soldier with his arms in a deadlock around a woman’s neck. Her shirt has been torn off exposing her breasts and she is kneeling in distress. The painting will be auctioned off at the Caribana Gala to raise money for scholarships for Haitian teens displaced by the earthquake that devastated the island. It’s a night of glamour. And it offers a chance to give, to Haitians in need. A formal affair where men and women in designer gowns and suits mingle with masqueraders in exotic costumes, the 2010 Scotiabank Caribana Gala will feature top calypso, R&B and soca performers. And a chance to make a donation to support Haitians displaced by the earthquake that devastated the country earlier this year. “We wanted to make an investment in youth and education, something tangible that can contribute in years to come,” says Elizabeth Grimmond, chair of Caribana’s gala committee. Now in its third year, the gala will honour community pioneers, organizers and leaders. Net proceeds will be donated to a scholarship fund for Haitian students in Canada. The hope is that one day these students will provide expertise to help build a new future for Haiti. Since the magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit in January, killing 230,000 people and displacing 1.5 million, more than 4,000 Haitians have sought refugee status in Canada, and many of them have children. “Because of limited financial resources, you wonder if those children will be in a position to fulfill their potential,” says Dr. Eric Pierre, Haiti’s Toronto consul general. “Having scholarship funds will assist them, especially the most gifted and neediest.” Performers at this year’s event, include the 2009 Canadian Calypso Monarch Michael Thomas, “Redman;” 13-year old Calypsonian prodigy, “Rashida” Clarke; Salmon Cupid, inventor of the e-pan or electronic steel drum; the Silver Stars Steel Orchestra from Trinidad and Tobago; the Afropan steel band, and DJ Soca Vibes. Leaders from performing arts, music and festival associations will be honoured. The Kathy Searles Award for volunteerism will be presented. Searles, who died in 2008, was one of the founders of Caribana, 43 years ago. “These people contributed back then and nobody knows who they are. Outdoor=Nature so this subject is used on institute curriculum’s, where young arts learner’s children are taken to outdoor. When the class room theories and imaginary painting work is done, then is ready to go for outdoor works. Only sharing theories with in class room is not a solution to be an artist, but learning outdoor in nature makes the refugee artists a successful one. When we go out door we can see the changeable nature and feeling sound of it. Every one enjoys the nature, and some living being copy the nature like artists does. With the theme of “Peace and Happiness through Spiritual Growth and Development” a team of nine Pundits headed by Pundit PL Nirola started Durga Puja on October 8 and that will end on October 17 on the day of Vijaya Dasami. Talking to Choeday Lhentshog (Religious Commision) Pundit Nirola said that Durga puja symbolizes the victory of good over evil. During the nine-day puja, the Devi Puran, Devi Saptasati, Ramayan, Vedas and other sacred religious texts will be recited, and prayers offered to seek blessings for good health and long life of the monarchs and the people of Bhutan. Reported by Lok Mahara for BNS from Beldangi-I Angdembe’s gazals attract exiled Bhutanese Posted: 2010-10-12 13:07:37 UTC+13:00 Various gazals of Prakash Angdembe, who chairs International Creators’ Forum (ICF), hit listeners in all camps this week. Orgnaised by ICF, a platform of both Nepali and Bhutanese artists, Angdembe’s gazal recitation program was coordinated by Jhakas Group of Sanischare in all seven camps. Hundreds of exiled Bhutanese were enthralled by his touching verses on different recipes including resettlement, life in camp, and other contemporary issues. Angdembe is a well known literary figure in the region and has been associated with various literary groups involving Nepalese and Bhutanese nationals.

Congratulation ACC U-19 Women’s champions, 2010

Nepal has once again won the CC U-19 Women’s Championship this year. To lift the ACC U-19 Women’s Championship 2010 Nepal beat Bhutan by 5 wickets on Tuesday (October 12, 2010) in the final game played at IA cricket ground in Singapore.

The final was reduced to 20 overs due to rain. After winning the toss, Nepal choose to field and restricted Bhutan to 53 runs in 20 overs. Out of a total of 6 wickets, Rubina Chhetri took three of them. In reply, Nepal scored 54 runs in 17.2 overs and at a loss of 5 wicktes. The player of the match, Sarita Magar, scored 23 runs.
